𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭

Here is the draft of my magazine article.

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━•❃°•° Self reflection°•°❃ •━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓

It was much more difficult than I had anticipated to create an article, especially because it needed to be about 700 words long. Compared to past blog posts I've written, this one took a lot longer to complete since I had to use both creativity and critical thinking to put together, checking my use of punctuation, grammar and sentence structure, while also catching up with the deadline. Moreover, I had to make multiple changes to my plan about the content I wanted to discuss. In the end, I decided to create an interview format because I believe readers can relate to the star appeal speaking their thoughts and to build a sense of connection among them. In any case, I had hoped for more time to write this post so that I would have more time to think thoroughly and perhaps even revise it because there are still a lot of things I would like to modify or improve.

I was able to further improve the language and content of my article by consulting with my teacher, who provided feedback and suggestions on my draft submission. This allowed me to proof read my article all over again as well as revising them so that I can properly communicate with my audience. After reading his feedback, I realised that although my interview was conducted face-to-face my first draft of the article was written in a highly formal style. Consequently, I need to change the language to something more conversational and informal so that my intended audience (teenage girls) can read and comprehend the content of my article more easily.

┗━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━•   ❃°•°❀°•°❃   •━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┛

First draft
Title: The New Fashion Sensation
Subheading: She has stepped into her own spotlight, receiving the best rising star artist in the Soul 2023 Awards and has just signed on as an ambassador for Chenelle, becoming the most influential to the public at a young age.

Article content:
Known for her distinctive style, (last name) has always been open about her thoughts, opinions and inspirations. Recently Charlene has agreed to serve as an ambassador for the Asian fashion house, Chenelle.

It can be said that her style has been popularised again by those who have now become a trend among young people. This unique, fresh and different concept has succeeded in getting the attention of every audience especially towards teenage girls.

She is seen wearing dark blue jeans with a black and white crop top with a star image in the center posted in the official announcement images. "Captivating global audiences with her versatile talent, Charlene, nominated for the Soul 2023 Awards for best rising star artists — joins Chenelle as a new House Ambassador," the company announced.

Through the brand's official announcement, Charlene was chosen as a young artist with very expressive power and who cannot contain her charm. “Charlene is a very young artist with great expressive power and an irresistible, charming individuality: a contrast that I find fascinating. She has personality, which to me is the most attractive trait,” said Rainelle, the managing director of Chenelle.

Nearly a year after making her debut, Charlene responds to questions regarding her creative process, sense of style, and sources of inspiration that will always influence her work and style.

What are your latest fashion obsession? I’m currently into baby tees, it's a great balance for when you want to be comfortable but still stylish. Baby tees come in a wide range of designs to suit your taste, which allows us to express our personality and individual style, that's what I love about them. I’ve been collecting for some time now, I always like to pair it with my skort!

What do you feel being the ambassador of Chenelle? As a fan of Chenelle, I’ve always dreamt of working with them some day, and I am so happy to have been selected as a global ambassador and it is such an honour. After debuting, my interest in fashion has grown and I think I’ll be able to learn and experience more about clothing with products of Chenelle so I’m really looking forward to it.

What is your favourite makeup look these days?
Though I haven't had much opportunity to test it out, I'm loving the orange and sun-kissed makeup looks as the weather warms up. I always bring the Baby Lips Balm with me since it's so compact and simple to use. All of the hues are quite adorable and organic. I think that the burnt orange with a hint of sparkle is very gorgeous!

How important it is for you to experiment with style?
What I do best is pushing myself to try new things, and it's not only in style. I think it's something I want to do consistently moving ahead. I'm making an effort to face my fears of attempting new things!

What do you have to say for anyone out there who is still finding their style? Have fun experimenting with all different kinds of styles that suit you the best! Fashion is all about expressing your personal style, so don't be afraid to experiment. So, just wear what makes you feel good and don't be afraid to mix different styles together.

Finally, what is your ultimate goal? What do you think about the future? It’s difficult to pinpoint one goal that we strive to achieve, especially considering that it has only been about a year since my debut. There's plenty to learn and do. For this moment, I want to explore the uncharted, and I believe that I will be able to accomplish a lot of things and have a lot of experiences along the way!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Receiving Feedback
Here is the written feedback I received from my teacher:
After consulting with the teacher regarding my first draft, it made me realized that considering the fact my magazine is intended for audiences that are leaning towards young female teenagers, the language I used was a bit too formal to understand especially when I positioned the situation as a face-to-face interview. I also plan to remove some of the parts of my article so that it looks compact and not too lengthy to be read as it might potentially bore the readers especially when my target audience is towards young teenagers, where they prefer articles that have less amount of text written and more visuals.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Revised Article
Below is the article I revised:
Title: All Eyes on Me
Subheading: She has stepped into her own spotlight, receiving the best rising star artist in the Soul 2023 Awards and has just signed on as an ambassador for Chenelle, becoming the most influential to the public at a young age.

Article content:
Known for her distinctive style, Tirta has always been open about her thoughts, opinions and inspirations.

She has personality, which to me is the most attractive trait,” said Allison, the managing director of Chenelle.

Nearly a year after making her debut, Charlene responds to questions regarding her creative process, sense of style, and sources of inspiration that will always influence her work and style.

What are your latest fashion obsession? Ooh.. I'm currently into baby tees. I feel like they're such a great balance for when you want to be comfortable but still stylish at the same time — they also come in a wide range of designs which I love. I’ve been collecting them for quite a while, I always like to pair it with my skort!

What do you have to say for anyone out there who is still finding their style? Hmm.. there are at times I have struggled about this as well [laughs]. I'd say just have fun experimenting with all different kinds of styles that suit you the best! Fashion is all about expressing your personal style, so don't be afraid to experiment. My best advice is just wear what makes you feel good and don't be afraid to mix different styles together.

There's been talk of the town of you being selected as Chenelle's newest brand ambassador, what do you feel about it?
I've always dreamt of working with them since I got into fashion. When I got the chat message (from Chenelle), I felt like I was on top of the world. It's such an honour for me to be part of this company. Since my debut, my interest in fashion has grown day by day and I'm looking forward to learn and experience more about clothing with their products.

Finally, what is your ultimate goal? What do you think about the future? Considering it has only been about a year since my debut, it's still difficult for me to focus on one goal I've been longing to achieve there's still plenty of room for me to learn and do. For now, I wish to explore the unknown, and I believe that I will be able to achieve a lot of things and have a lot of experiences along the way!

𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲

Here are the magazine terminologies I've learned during theory lesson, in which good understanding and memorisation is required for my magazine project.

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━•❃°•° Self-reflection°•°❃•━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓

At first when the teacher introduced us to the magazine terminologies, I was taken aback by the large amount of terms that I'm not familiar with that I need to memorise and comprehend. But as soon as we started to work on our research, I was able to connect the vocabulary to the different features of the magazine. After some time, I am able to comprehend them quickly, but occasionally, especially during the research stage of my magazine project, I still refer back to the list I write on my notes. Written note-taking is extremely beneficial for me to remember information and understand things better, because while I write, I'm also learning the topic. The magazine terminologies that I've learned during theory lesson really helped me a lot to recognise the elements of a magazine cover, this eases me more in conducting my magazine research and incorporate those terms into my magazine cover project later as I am already familiar with the terminology words.

┗━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━•   ❃°•°❀°•°❃   •━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┛

Here is my double page spread research  for my magazine. I have decided to separate my research and development from my front cover research to help me separate them and to be more organised.

I have conducted further research and development for my double page spread, here is the link for the blog page: https://chelstirta-regentsmedia.blogspot.com/2024/01/blog-post_59.html

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━•❃°•° Self reflection°•°❃ •━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓

After conducting this double page spread research, I gained tons of knowledge about the elements that go into making a double page spread. Among these is the realisation of how crucial display and layout are to making a positive first impression on readers. For instance, an audience will find the page boring to read if it has too many words and not enough visuals. Based on this evaluation, I would thus ensure that my double page spread gives a good impression to the readers by arranging the text neatly and balance between image, decoration and the article inside. Another thing I learned is the importance of drop caps, which capitalise the first letter of a word. The significance of drop caps, which capitalize the first letter of a word, is something else I learnt. I would like to add a drop cap to my article as well because they act as a visual indication to indicate the start of a new part or section, which makes the content more visually appealing and interesting for readers. Personally, I find it enjoyable to analyse the double-page spreads in both magazines. Making a table has made it easier for me to arrange the topics I wanted to analyze and to quickly review them again.

Here is my first double page spread from AURA special edition magazine called A-ONE

Before Reading
MagazineA-ONE
IssueDate of Issue: March 2013
Issue No. 6
PublisherAura Magazine
GenreFashion (The genre of this magazine fit into a sub-genre of Eastern beauty & health)
Images
- There are 2 images in the double spread, one for each page.
- The images are people dressing up with Japanese attire. One image shows a women holding an umbrella facing away the camera. The other image shows 2 women smiling while holding an item.
Layout
- The title and sub-heading of the page tend to have a bold and colourful font, while the content inside have smaller letter size.
- It does have a drop cap on the first paragraph of the article, the letter 'P' is capitalised and bolded with the colour blue.
- The page numbers are located on the bottom of the page (left and right). The size of the text are quite small hence it doesn't makes it stand out so that readers won't be focusing on that part.
First impressionsMy first impression when I come across this double page spread is that this page seems to contain a lot of information as there are many writings inside. The yellow colour that is used as the border makes the whole page stand out due to its bright colour which may attract readers, however I think that the colour doesn't suit with the whole page as it doesn't match with the images that are included. Moreover, all the primary colours (red, blue and yellow) are used as their main double page spread colour, and I feel that it doesn't really suit that much. Although the use of colour and layout are not that attractive, I do like that the sub-headings are bolded and in colour so that readers can easily differentiate different main points or sections of the whole article.

Heading
Latihan Menguatkan Kulit ala Jepang
(Translation: Japanese Skin Strengthening Exercises)
Subheading
(Translation: Japanese women are famous for their smooth, bright and wrinkle-free facial skin. One of the secrets of the treatment is to train the skin to rely on its own strength, which is called skin fasting.)
AuthorThe double page spread seems to not have a byline as well as the photographer mentioned.
ArticleThe article talks about how to strengthen the skin through skin care fasting with the aim of strengthening the skin's natural protective layer which is weakened by excessive cleansing. The whole articles addresses the step-by-step process of skin care fasting as well as the do's and dont's while implementing this method.
Mode of address
The article has direct mode of address from the use of words such as'you' or 'your', as if the article speaks directly towards the audience.
Furthermore, the writing style of this article is more into formal and
serious but still relaxed.
Pull QuoteIt doesn't have a pull quote.
Audience
The targeted audience of this magazine is primarily aimed for womens' during their middle/adult age, as the title says about strengthening skin.
ImpressionAfter reading the double page spread of this magazine, I think that this article is quite interesting to read, however it might be a bit boring as I read through due to the large amount of texts that filled the whole page.
InspirationI would like to incorporate some the features that are included in this double page spread to my own magazine later, which is the use of bullet points and different colours for the small headings so that it is easier for the audience to read and differentiate the sub-topics that are discussed.

Here is my second double page spread from Vogue for October 2023

MagazineVogue
IssueDate of Issue: October 2023
PublisherCondé Nast
GenreFashion (This genre of this magazine fit into a sub-genre of beauty, culture, living and runaway)
Images- There are 3 images in the double spread, one huge image that takes up the left page more, and two smaller images on the right side.
- The images are womens' who appears to wear a veil, looking directly to the camera. The middle image shows a group of womens' posing with the peace sign towards the camera.
Layout
- The whole article seems to have the same type of font, even so the sizes of the title, sub-heading and content are different.
- It does have a drop cap on the first paragraph of the article, and the size is relatively big. The letter 'W' is capitalised.
- The page numbers are located on the bottom of the page (left and right). The size of the text are quite small hence it doesn't makes it stand out so that readers won't be focusing on that part.
First impressionsMy first impression when I first saw this page is that it looks like it contains a lot of texts, with tends to have limited creative design as there is no colours used for the text other than black. However though, the layout looks pleasing and neat to look at as it is in justify. When I see the images inserted to the article, it may suggest that this article will be talking about women empowerment hence explaining the minimalistic design due to the seriousness of the topic.

HeadingFighting Spirit
SubheadingAs the conflict in SUDAN rages on, cases of sexual VIOLENCE are reaching new heights. SULAIMA ISHAQ ELKHALIFA tells AMEL MUKHTAR about her battle to end this war on WOMEN
AuthorThe double page spread seems to not have a byline as well as the photographer mentioned.
ArticleAfter reading, the article talks about the war that happened in Sudan. Sulaima can't help but hope for the best, but as a human right defender especially when she's the general director of Sudan's Unit for Combating Violence Against Women, she knows a return to normality will not be simple, so she tries to take an action.
Mode of addressThis article has indirect mode of address, where it talks about an event in third person.
Pull Quote
It does have a pull quote, which says, "If I RESIGN, they will say I left because I FEAR them. I'm STAYING and siding with WOMEN and GIRLS of SUDAN"
This pull quote is used to draw reader's attention to the text of the article from which it is quoted and to emphasize the important or main opinion of the main subject.
AudienceThe audience for this magazine is targeted for older women as the topic won't be comprehensible for younger audience.
ImpressionI think that the article is quite a heavy topic for me to read as I don't usually read these kind of topics mainly politics, hence it appears to be quite boring for me to read especially when the whole article is almost covered with text in the same font and colour.
InspirationI would like to incorporate some the features that are included in this double page spread to my own magazine later, which is the use of justify margin and to follow the shape of the images to make my article look neat and clean.

𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬

Here are the online technical skills I've developed throughout planning and creating my magazine. There are some problems I've encountered as well throughout the project, hence this blog will explain briefly how I resolved these problems.

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━•❃°•° Self-reflection°•°❃•━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓

I was somewhat surprised on how easy and straightforward the task was. Since I've seen everywhere that code seems complicated, I frequently find the thought of coding on a website intimidating, but I can utilize it to accomplish simple tasks. Since I've seen everywhere that code seems complicated, I frequently find the thought of coding on a website intimidating, but I can utilize it to accomplish simple tasks. Despite the fact that the video tutorial was released in 2016 and hasn't received many views, I had no issue following along because it was brief and had clear instructions. Here in my blog, I have provided a detailed step-by-step procedure so that I can revisit it in case that I forget how to respond to this problem again. Because of this, I believe that the next time I have to code, I won't be worried since I know that there are always YouTube tutorials for any problem. If there aren't any tutorials available, I can always ask my teacher for help because his explanations are easy to understand and he always ensure that everyone can figure out the problems they run into.

The Use of Blogger

Problem 1: Embedding file to blogger
Several of my blog posts (such as brief & statement of intent) needs to have an embeded file by embedding external content or another software (in this case, google documents and google slides) to my blog posts.

At first I had no idea on how to embed a file to a blog, so I listened to my teachers' explanation during class by following the steps on how to embed a file correctly. Here are the steps I've followed to embed the brief file onto my blog:

1.) Make a copy of the provided presentation (so that I can edit and share the file freely)

2.) Click "Share" and "Publish to web" of the google slides document. Make sure that "Anyone with the link" has access

3.) Copy the whole embed link of the file

4.) In the blogger page, open up "HTML View"

5.) Paste the link

6.) Click "Publish". The embedded file should like look this

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem 2: Unable to resize embedded file into it's desired size
In my blog post for Statement of Intent, I had to embed a google document file onto my blog page. I tried to do with a "simple" embed link using my prior knowledge the teacher had taught me during class, as it worked perfectly fine when I tried to embed my google slides presentation to my blog page. However this time, this technique did not work well because I wasn't able to resize the image. As a result when it is published, it turned out small and hard to read.

Here I tried to paste my embed code from the document directly to my HTML page

But as I published the blog page, I was unable to change the size of the image file

In order to overcome this problem, I researched online on how to embed a file to blogger with it's desirable size and found a useful YouTube video that explained how to do it. Here are the steps that I followed in doing so:

1.) Paste the embed code to the HTML page view
2.) Before the >, press space and change the size of the document by adding "Width=... Height=..." (Here I decide change my size to width=800 height=1200)

3.) Click "Publish"
Now, the image file looks larger and visible enough for the readers to see easily

Creating an Online Flip book

Problem: Incompatible website
To begin, I searched up the most popular websites that are mostly used to create an online flip book. I saw this website called 'Flipsnack' and wanted to try out. A disadvantage from this website is that in order to create a flip book using existing pages of my magazine, I would have to insert them to each page one by one and adjust the size, this would affect the quality of my image to worsen as well as taking more time. Another problem for my magazine is that the maximum number of pages I can use is 4-5 pages (including front and back) in which all of my magazine pages won't fit. Furthermore, I've only given 14 days of free trial which means that I would have to find another website to use that are free and convenient to use.

I found another website to use called 'Heyzine'.

One issue I had with this was that I couldn't add any more pages, and I found it unusual that it could only have one page. I made the decision to look for a video tutorial that would enable me to create my magazine flip book. Below are the steps I've followed:

1.) Go to Canva (my design software), gather all my pages into one file

2.) Click 'share design' then choose 'Heyzine' (This website is already connected to Canva hence it can be published automatically)

3.) It will redirect my page to Heyzine and all my pages now are compiled automatically into a flip book

Overall, this method is way efficient and easier for me to create a flip book in one go.

𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬

Here are my notes and practices from a theory lesson in class about genre theory and how media companies target audiences through demographics and psychographics.

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━•❃°•° Self reflection°•°❃ •━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓

I gained a better understanding of how to change a genre to target new audiences that I can use for my magazine project later on by conducting plenty of analysis practices regarding how different audiences are targeted through genre theory and demographics & psychographics. Working in a group discussion is beneficial to me because it allows us to discuss our different perspectives while analyzing the two magazines with different target audiences. My teammates may also suggest ideas that I hadn't thought of, which will help me apply this knowledge of critical thinking in the future. Since my group's research has shown that fashion and lifestyle are the main topics of my fashion magazine, I think this research will be especially helpful for it. Even though the magazines I've picked are aimed toward older women and men, I want to create a magazine that appeals to younger audience such as teenage girls, so I'll make differences, to use Steve Neale's words, to things like color, typeface, and star appeal. In addition, by doing the teacher's compulsory test, I can evaluate my performance more objectively and make improvements based on the teacher's feedback and recommendations, which will help me better target the audience of my magazine.

┗━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━•   ❃°•°❀°•°❃   •━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┛

I worked as part of a group but participated in the discussion on how different genre of magazines target audience through demographics and psychographics (sorry that the notes are quite messy).

Chosen magazine 1 - Cosmopolitan by Hearst Magazines, UK 2013

Chosen magazine 2 - GQ Conde Nast Publications, 2016 September

I did another magazine analysis from the use of demographics and psychographics as a unit test assessed by the teacher. The question was, "How are audiences targeted by the media?". In answering the question, I used the case study comparison between a Teen Vogue magazine and Men's Health magazine. The image attached below was my paragraph answer, as well as comments and revisions added by the teacher.
