Here is my location scout for my potential locations for my magazine cover. This research will aid me in making a decision on where my photos will take place and which one works for my genre.
I conducted a location scout over the holidays to gather ideas and inspiration on what will my front cover magazine look like. I picture my front cover to include a child or teen model with trendy poses as it is targeted towards teenagers mostly females. Therefore, I would want a background that goes well with a modern theme and successfully attract my target audience.

Creating this post gives me inspiration for the ideal location for my magazine. I became more aware of potential hazards and the need for increased caution after reviewing the risk assessments. The precautions I've taken will save me a ton of time because I won't have to postpone my shoot if any of these events happen. Aside from that, I believe location scout is an important step for my pre-production process because I needed to consider several things including: purpose of my shoot, media language I can use, pros & cons of the location, alternative location I can use as well as evaluating risk assessment. By this, I can choose a location that is flexible and aligned with my magazine genre. Analysing the benefits and drawbacks is not too difficult for me to choose the best spot for my front cover background because I want it to be simple and not too hectic. A challenge for me is to find the best angle shot and model for my front cover later on that will attract my target audience, hence I must evaluate each location in depth and clearly in order for easier comparison and finally choose the most suitable location for my final magazine. At the end, I decided choose the car backseat for my front cover magazine.

━━・❪ LOCATION 1: CAR BACKSEAT ❫ ・━━
Purpose of the Shoot
The purpose of this shoot is for my front cover
Media Language
- I might use a slightly high angle shot, in which the shot is taken from above / the camera looks down at the subject from above
- The subject in the shot has direct mode of address, in which the model looks directly to the camera while posing to; this connotes personal touch and builds relationship between the text and the audience
- The use of trendy poses and facial expressions to attract intended target audience (teenage girls), such as the use of hand gestures rather than a static pose
Pros of Location
- As the colour of the car seat is black, it makes it more flexible to decide on what the model can wear because it has good contrast with any colours used
- As the photoshoot takes place inside a car, so there is no worry if unexpected weather conditions such as sudden rain or others, so it won't affect the model's appearance
Cons of Location
- Poses can be limited due to small space
- The background window doesn’t look that appealing, unless it's edited or purposely move the car to a better location
Alternative Location
- Front of the car: Might have bad lighting, unable to shot the model in various angles (unlike the car seat, shots can be done in different positions like from the front seat, side, bottom or even above)
RISK ASSESSMENT
Potential Hazards & Evaluate Risks
- Car might move by itself (if it’s on without knowing), this will cause an unstable shot being produced and might potentially harm other people inside (might fall over, dangerous if the door is still open) & outside (might got hit unknowingly) of the car
Control Measures & Implementation Timeframe
- Make sure that the car is turned off before the model enters the car seat to prevent them from harm (during photoshoot day)

━━・❪ LOCATION 2: OUTDOOR / OUTSIDE HOME ❫ ・━━
Purpose of the Shoot
The purpose of this shoot is for my front cover
Media Language
- Medium shot of the model besides the plant
- The use of natural lighting, morning or early evening shoots provide the softest and warmest forms of natural lighting and to look more flattering and less gloomy
Pros of Location
- Lighting can be difficult depending on the weather and sun position during that time considering it is outdoor
Cons of Location
- Animals such as bugs or lizards are likely to appear as the location is placed near a plant in which they can inhabit or come out randomly
- The unpredictable weather change can delay the shooting, especially when it's raining because it takes time for it to dry
- The plants might not be taken care of properly hence it might not grow well such as dried leaves, if this shot is used for the front cover, it is doubtful that the magazine would appeal to the audience
- The location might not fit the aesthetic I'm going for / doesn't meet my vision (needs to be more trendy for young teenagers, nature vibes does not suit that well)
Alternative Location
- Botanical garden: More variety of colours and types of plants, needs extra care because withered plants won't look appealing)
RISK ASSESSMENT
Potential Hazards & Evaluate Risks
- If the model has certain allergies or phobia, they might be disturbed or intimidated by the bugs or lizards that can appear anytime
- The weather can be unpredictable at times such as raining, thunderstorms, wind, or extreme heat which can increase the chance of having heat stroke (especially in Bali, Indonesia where the weather might change at random and unexpectedly)
Control Measures & Implementation Timeframe
- Preparation props: January 26, 2024
- Photoshoot: January 27, 2024

━━・❪ LOCATION 3: CAR BACKSEAT ❫ ・━━
Purpose of the Shoot
Double paged spread / Contents page
Media Language
- A high angle shot can be used, while the model is looking upwards towards the camera
- A low angle shot can be used, this can make the model look more authoritative combined with the use of direct mode of address
Pros of Location
- Other supporting props can be added easily (e.g. books, electronic items, etc)
- More variety of model poses, meaning that they could express their unique personalities and showcase their best features
Cons of Location
- Might fall down if they’re not doing a fixed position pose or poses that might considered 'extreme' (e.g. gymnastics) due to imbalance
Alternative Location
- A single chair: Higher risk of falling down if not used carefully
RISK ASSESSMENT
Potential Hazards & Evaluate Risks
- Model might fall of the sofa during posing which can potentially injured them
- The sofa might have sharp edges which can harm the model, therefore it needs to be ensured that the edges are smooth and covered to prevent any accidents from happening
- Props might be used for the shot hence items can be dangerous for the model in such that sharp objects that can hurt them
Control Measures & Implementation Timeframe
- Make sure the sofa is in a good condition (no stain, scratches, etc) on January 26th, 2024

━━・❪ LOCATION 4: STICKY NOTES BOARD ❫ ・━━
Purpose of the Shoot
I went to an event that is held in a mall where I found an interactive shooting location of a large board filled with colorful sticky notes placed everywhere. I would really like to use this location as an inspiration for my front cover magazine.
Media Language
- Medium shot the capture the contrast between the background and outfit of model
Pros of Location
- Vibrant colours can attract audiences more when they took a glimpse of the page
Cons of Location
- The sticky notes might fall off easily as it would gradually lose its stickiness after for some time
- If the wrong colour palette is chosen for the model’s outfit, readers might focus more to the background than the model itself
Alternative Location
- Photobox: Limited tries and might produce desired pictures
RISK ASSESSMENT
Potential Hazards & Evaluate Risks
- Potential risk of getting a paper cut
Control Measures & Implementation Timeframe
- Make sure the model doesn't stand too near with the sticky notes board so that it won't fall off or getting a paper cut

━━・❪ LOCATION 5: DECORATED MIRROR ❫ ・━━
Purpose of the Shoot
During the event held at the mall, I also encountered an interesting and unique photo spot, which is a large mirror with different writings fonts using either acrylic or board marker and stickers for decorative purposes. I would also liked to use this location as an inspiration for my either front cover or contents page of my magazine.
Media Language
- Long shot to capture the whole decorated mirror, as well as the model's clothing from top to bottom
Pros of Location
- Easily customisable in terms of drawings, colour used
Cons of Location
- The reflection of other people or the cameraman can be seen and it might be a challenge to work it out, in such finding suitable angles so that people other than the model cannot be seen or editing the image which can take much time especially if not familiar with the editing software on how to do it
- Model's face might not be seen clearly due to the mirror covered with doodles
Alternative Location
- Home mirror: Plain background but the size of mirror tend to be small
RISK ASSESSMENT
Potential Hazards & Evaluate Risks
- The mirror might break and harm the model
Control Measures & Implementation Timeframe
- Make sure that the mirror's condition is fine (no broken glass) and made out of tough material
